the picture below was from Dec 8th, 2015. Yes some winters come a bit later, but the snow has always arrived. This winter of 2015 came shortly after the 8th and we were skiing. We have seen winters come when we don’t even pack with snowmobiles and go right to breaking out both Pisten Bullies! Please be patient, watch our webcams, the website and the weather….winter can come quickly and we are ready.

ABR Trails gets an Abundance of Snow

Why do people love cross country skiing at ABR trails?

There are many varied answers, but one reason everyone agrees to is the abundance of natural snow. The Ironwood area is one of the top 10 snowiest destinations in the USA. Last year they boasted a recorded 253 inches against an average of nearly 200 inches annually. ABR is smack in the middle of the snow-belt. This belt gets substantially more snow than close surrounding areas. Only 30 miles south of ABR Trails average snowfall drops off to 40-60”.

Rising air is the producer of all precipitation. The greater the temperature difference between the lake & the air, the greater potential for snow. Heat & moisture form & cause clouds, and as they grow, snow begins to fall downwind of the lake where ABR is located.
